Long Creek Falls Campout

Long Creek Falls is a popular hiking destination within the Blue Ridge Wilderness Management Area (WMA), northwest of Dahlonega, approximately 80 miles from Tucker, and is the location of our September campout (September 19 – 21).

The falls are about a mile from parking and the trailhead, along the Appalachian Trail. Camping is primitive with no facilities; water can be collected and sanitized from Long Creek. It should be possible to find camping within a few hundred yards of the trailhead (along the creek). There may also be camping available at the top of the falls, if no one has taken that spot. Camping in the WMA is dispersed (i.e. – anywhere you want), but it’s first come, first served.

This is a good trip for scouts and parents, but maybe not the best for young children. While the hike
is shorter than Raven Cliff Falls, the area is more remote. This trip should be fairly relaxing with opportunities to play in the falls, perhaps some bushcrafting, and a 1.5 mile hike to the Stover Creek AT Shelter. Scouts can decide in advance what they want to do.

Access to the trailhead is on gravel forest service roads that are in poor condition. You don’t need 4×4, but a low-clearance car will struggle. Subaru-height or more will do fine. Parking is just a wide spot in the road, so the fewer vehicles we take the better. One exception might be if an adult wants to go up early Friday to scout the camping location and put down some tents to mark our spot.

Below are a couple of helpful links:

Please send any questions to Mr. Chris May, who will be the adult leader for the trip. Some of the Scouts have hiked along this portion of the AT, and they will shape the activities for the youth.

Sounds fun right? Anyone interested should sign-up by Monday, September 8, using the link below.

Per usual, the cost will be $15 for each Scout (to cover the cost of food). The preference is to pay with cash or check, but [PayPal] is also available.
