High Falls Canoe Camping

Saturday May 16th, 8 AM – Sunday May 17th

Adult Organizer: Chris May | Scout Organizer: TBD

Pack light for a unique campsite only reachable by canoe. This is a primitive camping area with a pit toilet and established fire ring. The paddle to camp is short (~0.5 miles), but we’ll spend around 6 hours exploring over 5 miles of High Falls Lake. Have a hearty breakfast at home and bring a snack for on the water.

Swimmers only: All participants (youth and adults) must be certified as BSA Swimmers — Beginner certification is not sufficient. You must be in strong physical health. If unsure, check with Mr. May. 1st year scouts are unlikely to be able to participate. Senior scout participation is especially encouraged, particularly those with paddle experience.

We will most likely rent canoes, PFDs, and paddles from the state park. If you have your own PFD (life jacket), bring it to a meeting for certification check. The Troop has large dry bags; personal items will need your own dry bag or heavy-duty trash bags. No patrol boxes or 2-burner stoves — we’ll use backpacking stoves and eat like backpackers.

Max 15 participants (at least 2 adults). Sign-up closes May 4th.

Directions: Located ~60 miles from Scout House (~1 hour). Arrive by 8 AM. South on 285 → South on 675 → South on 75 → Exit 198 East on High Falls Rd → Left on Lakeshore Dr to parking & check-in. Parking Pass required: $10 (or Friends of GA State Parks Pass).
