Merit Badge Spotlight – Family Life

To earn the Rank of Eagle, you must earn 21 Merit Badges, 13 of which are required. Of those 13, 3 include 90 day tracking challenges, Personal Fitness, Personal Management, and Family Life. Because of this tracking, they are rarely offered at camps or with the council.

Personal Management is best done by older Scouts because it involves tracking income and most younger Scouts do not have jobs. Personal Fitness and Family Life are two that can easily be done at any age and actually are easy to do simultaneously.

One requirement of Personal Fitness involves tracking your fitness and exercise for 90 days, which is great to start at the beginning of the school year (if you are taking a PE in school or are on a sports team). The exercise is already part of your schedule; you just need to write it down.

Family Life involves tracking your household duties and chores for 90 days, the two of these can
be on a chart together, simplifying things.

Ms. Kristi Bluett will begin a Family Life MB class on Sunday, August 24, at 4 pm inside the Scout Hut. We will only meet as a group this one time and will complete requirements 1, 3, and 7. We will discuss what all needs to be done and how to go about completing the rest of the requirements.

Parents, you will notice this MB requires some deep conversations with you child about drugs, alcohol, sex education, family finances, belief systems and includes a discussion about a family crisis. This section will be discussed one on one with Ms. Bluett, not as a group. She will not ask your Scout to give personal answers about your family when they meet. Her questions will be general to verify that the meetings did take place and how they felt discussing these items with their family, not what the crisis was, or how you view these personal and private topics.

If you would like to start the MB but can’t attend on the August 24, you can still work on it on an individual basis. Also, Ms. Katherine Hunt (Scoutmaster for Troop 129 G) and Ms. Brandie Bedard (our incoming Advancement Chair) are councelors for this MB. You can reach out to them at a later date to begin.
