Join us Saturday morning at Stone Mountain Park for a 1.5-mile introduction to orienteering. The shaded course starts near the chimney of an old homestead along the Cherokee Trail, just north-west of the Children’s Playground and Howell Lake. There is no cleared trail to follow, but the hike isn’t strenuous.
Junior rank scouts can complete rank requirements for Second Class 3a and First Class 4a & 4b. Please check your Scout Book and for details and BE PREPARED.
Where: The Childrens Playground parking lot at Stone Mountain Park. If the lot is full, there is an overflow lot a little further up the road.
When: Saturday morning, November 15th, 2025
- 9am at the Children’s Playground parking lot at Stone Mountain Park
- Those wanting to carpool – 8:20am at the Scout Hut
- We should return to the Children’s Playground parking lot around 10:30am.
What to bring: Everything scouts normally bring on an outing.
- Small pack
- 1+ liters of water
- Small snack
- Clothing layers, depending on forecast
- Sturdy shoes or boots
Also bring:
- Compass with a rotating bezel marked in degrees. If you’re not sure, please ask.
- Notebook & pencil (a rigid notebook is easier to write in).
- Scout Book if you are getting requirements signed off.
- Map of Stone Mtn – you can pick this up at the gate when you enter. (Even better would be a topographical map of the area).
- Handheld GPS or GPS app, if you have one. If you plan to use your phone, I suggest GAIA gps. It is free to use for our purposes, but I do believe you need to make an account.
The adult leader for this activity will be Chris May, please ask him any questions. At least 1 other adult will need to attend for 2-deep leadership.
We have 2 Merit Badge Counselors for Orienteering – Mr Carey & Mr Ware. If you are interested in pursuing this MB, please discuss with Scoutmaster Runels & one of the MBCs.
